In Red Queen, Mare discovered that she had the blood of a Red, but the abilities of a Silver, making her a new and frightful combination, a New Blood. Used by Prince Maven in a terrifying plot to kill his father, ascend the throne, and frame his older brother Tiberias for it, Mare barely managed to escape when the Scarlet Guard broke her and the former crown prince out of their death sentence.

Now on the run from King Maven and his Silver minions, Mare and Cal find themselves as enemies of the people and hated for their unwilling participation in the murder of Maven’s father. A glimmer of hope is restored however, when Mare discovers that her brother Shade has in fact survived the war and they are reunited. There’s more. Shade is able to teleport instantly from place to place, a Silver ability present in someone who has red blood. Suddenly, Mare remembers what her old Silver teacher Julian taught her. There are others who are like her: Red with special silver abilities. And genetic testing has identified them as a strange blood type. Unfortunately, she knows that Maven also has this information. The race is now on between the two to see who can rescue or kill the most New Bloods.

By rescuing and training as many New Bloods as she can, Mare hopes to assemble an army to defeat Maven. In the process, however, she may find herself becoming the same type of tyrant Maven is, ready to sacrifice anyone and anything to accomplish her goals.

At the same time, she’s slowly falling for Tiberias, but the Maven from before the King’s execution still lurks in her mind. A symbol for Reds everywhere, the Lightning Girl may not have enough power to save her own heart from betraying her ...

The story continues in King's Cage.
