George will be graduating middle school soon, until the principal discovers that he has not completed his hours of community service. Functionally homeless and living in a motel with his mom and sister, George does not have time to do community service after school. The principal finds the perfect opportunity during the school day when George can work in the cafeteria, cleaning and doing various tasks, until he has amassed enough hours to meet the graduation requirement.
Arriving in the cafeteria on the first day of community service, George realizes he's mainly there to translate for Mrs. Grouser, the cafeteria lady, as the other students doing community service are all Hispanics. There's Sara, who's quiet and shy. There's Dayara, who's tough and who often resorts to violence. There's Miguel, a popular jock who would rather be drawing. And there's Nico, who comes from privilege and wouldn't want to get his hands dirty.
The five of them try to find common ground as they struggle to work together under the watchful eye of Mrs. Grouser. When they realize that a little girl and her mother are homeless and living in a van by the public playground next to the school, the group gains a focus and starts putting aside their prejudices.
As they work together to help Lisa and her mother, the five students begin to discover unexpected commonalities and develop a genuine sense of camaraderie. They learn to appreciate each other's unique perspectives and support one another through personal challenges.
Invisible is a heartwarming graphic novel that explores themes of friendship, empathy, and the importance of embracing diversity. It beautifully illustrates how unexpected connections can emerge from unlikely circumstances, reminding readers that true friendship can blossom in the most unexpected places.
