Nine is an orphaned pickpocket who yearns to escape her existence in the Nest of a Thousand Treasures. She gets the opportunity when she steals a small, house-shaped ornament from a mysterious woman's purse. Upon knocking on its tiny door, the ornament magically expands into a sprawling, unconventional house. Inside, she discovers a quirky assortment of enchanted inhabitants, including Flabberghast, a competitive young wizard with a penchant for hopscotch, and a comically hideous troll housekeeper devoted to his feather duster.
These whimsical characters reveal they are all trapped under a powerful and unusual spell that they desperately need Nine to break. In exchange for her help, they offer her the promise of a new life, hinting at a future far removed from her current struggles. During Nine's journey, she unravels some of the house's secrets. She finds a sense of belonging among its magical residents, and she utilizes her ingenuity to free them from their enchantment, tying them to the house.
