Jane McGonigal leads one of the most interesting lives. Born in Pennsylvania in 1977, she moved to California in 2001 to attend the University of California, Berkeley, and began playing alternate reality games (ARG). Hooked by the concept, she started designing her own games, winning the 2005 International Game Developers Association’s Innovation Award for her ARG titled I love Bees.

Her passion for games led her to complete a doctorate in game design and theory, and she now teaches these courses. At the same time, she continued developing ARGs, and created the widely successful Lost Sport Olympics ARG, with more than 2.5 million people participating throughout the world.

McGonigal believes that everyone benefits when games are used to solve problems, from students and teachers to world leaders and scientists. Her fascinating life is proof that playing games can positively change the world.
