On June 6, 1944, the largest naval fleet ever assembled reached the beaches of Normandy, in France, and landed over 152,000 soldiers. The largest amphibian assault ever conducted, D-Day was preceded by the biggest paratrooper deployment. Surrounded by secrecy, the goal of D-Day was to breach the Nazi hold over Europe and provide a much needed second front.
The preparations for D-Day were meticulous, down to the amount of spare tires and morphine shots that would be needed. For months, a small army lead by General Eisenhower prepared for every possibility, and when the first soldier stepped on the beach the hopes of Europe’s liberation followed him.
Told in short and crisp chapters, this book highlights how Operation Overlord was planned and conducted, and provides a few short chapters on what happened next. Extremely detailed and well illustrated, D-Day will be appreciated by amateurs of the Second World War. Appendices in the back of the book include salary tables for soldiers; the content of a paratrooper’s pack; the gear carried by a soldier landing on the beach; equipment of each armies; and profiles of famous ships, tanks, and airplanes.
